Groundwater models are used to simulate and predict aquifer conditions, and they are often formulated as  time-dependent advection-diffusion problems mathematically.  In some cases, the aquifer may contain drip irrigation, subsurface drainage system, pumping wells, drainage ditch,  etc.  Under these circumstances, the groundwater models should be regarded as point or line source problems, which needs to be treated carefully in numericalsimulation, and a locally refined mesh is prefered to discretize the model. To overcome the numerical difficulties, we propose a vertex-centered finite volume method, which is applicable for arbitrary polygonal meshes, especially for locally refined meshes. Numerical tests are conducted on various cases in groundwater problem, including single pumping well and multiple pumping wells in confined/uncofined aquifer, single pumping well in heterogenous and anisoropic aquifer, etc. Numerical results are evaluated by comparison with those simulated by a famous groundwater flow simulation software MODFLOW, which shows the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method..
